The Best Moist Banana Bread with Added Fibre

moist healthy banana bread with fibre

There’s a reason banana bread is one of those recipes people come back to over and over again.

It’s comforting, simple, nostalgic, and usually made from ingredients already sitting in the kitchen. But a lot of banana bread recipes are mostly refined flour and sugar, which means they often don’t keep us full for very long.

We wanted a version that still tastes like real banana bread — soft, moist, warmly spiced, and cozy — while adding a little more nourishment and staying power.

This banana bread is made with ripe bananas, applesauce, Greek yogurt, cinnamon, and Bloom Boost, our dietitian-created fibre blend made with ingredients like oat bran, chia, flax, hemp hearts, pumpkin seed, and psyllium.

The result is a moist banana bread with added fibre that still tastes like classic homemade banana bread — not “healthy banana bread.”

And honestly? We think it tastes even better the next day.

Why We Love This Banana Bread Recipe

This recipe is:

  • Soft and moist — not dry or dense
  • Made with simple pantry ingredients
  • Higher in fibre than traditional banana bread
  • Naturally sweetened with maple syrup or honey
  • Freezer-friendly
  • Great for breakfast, snacks, or lunchboxes
  • Easy to customize with chocolate chips or walnuts

One of the biggest challenges when baking with fibre-rich ingredients is texture. Ingredients like chia, flax, and psyllium absorb moisture quickly, which is why many fibre-heavy baked goods turn out dry.

This recipe was specifically designed to stay soft and fluffy even with added fibre.

Why Add Fibre to Banana Bread?

Most baked goods are fairly low in fibre, even the ones marketed as “healthy.” Adding fibre-rich ingredients can help make recipes more satisfying and balanced while supporting digestion and helping meals feel more filling. That’s one reason we love adding Bloom Boost to baking recipes. Because it’s made with ingredients like oat bran, chia, flax, hemp hearts, pumpkin seed, and psyllium, it blends surprisingly well into recipes like:

  • banana bread
  • muffins
  • pancakes
  • oatmeal
  • smoothies
  • energy bites

Instead of trying to make banana bread restrictive or “diet” focused, we’d rather make it a little more nourishing and satisfying while still tasting good.

Tips for Baking with Bloom Boost

When baking with fibre-rich ingredients, moisture matters. Ingredients like psyllium, chia, and flax absorb liquid quickly, which means recipes often need ingredients like yogurt, applesauce, mashed banana, or oil to help maintain softness. A few things we’ve found helpful:

  • Don’t overmix the batter
  • Don’t overbake
  • Let baked goods cool fully before slicing
  • Banana bread often tastes even better the next day
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container to help retain moisture

Why Banana Bread Sometimes Turns Out Dry

One of the most common complaints with healthy banana bread recipes is dryness. Banana bread can turn out dry for a few reasons:

  • too much flour
  • overbaking
  • not enough fat or moisture
  • adding fibre without adjusting liquids
  • overmixing the batter

Because fibre absorbs moisture, recipes often need additional wet ingredients to maintain texture. That’s why this recipe includes bananas, applesauce, yogurt, and oil — to help balance the added fibre and keep the loaf soft and tender.

Ways to Make Banana Bread More Balanced

Banana bread is delicious on its own, but pairing it with protein and healthy fats can help make it more satisfying. Some easy ideas:

  • Greek yogurt
  • Nut butter
  • Cottage cheese
  • A smoothie
  • Hard-boiled eggs
  • Milk

How to Store Banana Bread

On the Counter

Store in an airtight container for 2–3 days.

In the Fridge

Banana bread can last up to a week refrigerated, though refrigeration may slightly dry out the texture.

In the Freezer

Slice before freezing so you can grab individual pieces as needed. Reheat in the microwave or toaster oven.
